About This Game

Description:

You don’t control how your Pokémon Legends: Z-A move, but they’ll move about the battlefield with you, and if you manage to dodge and time your attacks just right, you’ll either save your ‘mon’s HP or cost it. There are a lot of decision-making moments, as some attacks will have a longer animation and windup than others, and spamming each attack as soon as they’re ready to use again may not always be the right choice. The next part of my demo consisted of a Zygarde in doggo chasing me. I found this section somewhat too straight and a little too scripted and stilted, but it’s here that I first noticed a little bit of pop in on the background detail.

I have to say that everything I played was as smooth as butter at 60fps, otherwise. But the design choice to set this game within a concrete jungle hasn’t totally won me over yet. I loved the wide open vistas found in Arceus; watching the sun rise, seeing the color of the landscapes change was a delight. I’m afraid that the back street pretty images of the damp streets become very repetitive over time, but I haven’t yet delved into what Pokémon Legends: Z-A has to offer and won’t know if it ever gets repetitive until I do.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A Gameplay:

Yes, that Zygarde that I was chasing after! Right, where was it now? I turned around, and there was Zygarde, who attacked me and took me up to the roof tops, and started fighting with an Absol that could Mega Evolve. I said “2006” Davey Havok is a favorite of ours, but that’s Absol Zygarde, thanks for that! This was done at pretty much the beginning of the game since I only had a Chikorita on my team, but thankfully a neighbouring Lucario joined in and taught me how to switch my Chikorita to Mega Evolution.

I used it for myself; one of my pretty teammates, Lida, encouraged me to give it a shot. In the cramped quarters of city lanes, one can easily be caught off guard, and can also be a good place to be able to crouch and creep up on a target. Like Legends: Arceus before it, Battle starts with a smooth transition, but Legends: Z-A eliminates the slightly tweaked version of turn-based combat that we’re all used to in Legends: Arceus. Rather, the game at Z-A is full of real-time action. At least that is how it’s marketed.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A Features:

  • Real-Time Combat: Battles will be played in real time. You can directly direct your Pokémon to attack, and be able to move your character to roll and parry incoming attacks.
  • Instead of Power Points (PP), moves have their own cooldown timers that are closely linked to your Pokémon’s speed stat.
  • Stealth: Can sneak up on wandering trainers or wild Pokémon in the overworld using stealth. The 1st hit will give you a huge buff because you can queue and use the same skill twice within the same cooldown period.
  • Mega Evolution: The popular Mega Evolution mechanic returns. In combat, Mega Energy may be gathered to be applied to your Pokémon for a brief time to change their type, boost their strength, and even more.
