Biomorph (all caps) is a soul-like Metroidvania game developed and published by indie developer Lucid Dreams Studio. A port for the Nintendo Switch is also under development and is due to be released on April 5, 2024. It was nominated for the 2024 Canadian Game Awards Game of the Year.

This game is ok. Contains some neat gameplay features. Art and music are good. However, there are a few extremely obnoxious bugs. If you’re a Platformer player and this game is on sale, it is a game worth playing. Bring back the good old times of Hollow Knight! It’s a Metroidvania! A game with a wonderful soundtrack, gameplay involving eating enemies to clear up some obstacles, decent side quests, and more. The hours I spent playing this game were quite satisfactory.

Gameplay:

As of August 2022, it was announced by the developers, Lucid Dreams Studio, that the game would release on April 5, 2024, to avoid a crowded window and to “polish the game to perfection”.[1] Ubisoft Montreal funded and provided support for the game’s development. [7]

Biomorph, on the other hand, is a wonderful addition to the Metroidvania genre that doesn’t need much of anything in terms of combat and has a vast amount of world to explore, which has some clever level design and is rewarding with some town-restoration mechanics. Despite that, I couldn’t help but come away feeling as though it was somewhat of a missed opportunity. Unfortunately, as the novelty of the morphs to enemies fades due to not having a reason to revisit the enemies once you have left the biome where they initially appeared, it’s a bit of a shame.

Key Features:

• Absorb & Transform: When you defeat an enemy, you can absorb its corpse and become that enemy to use its same powers.
• Permanent Unlocks: Some species can be defeated several times, and their genetic code will then be permanently recorded, which means you may morph into them at any time.
• Traversal & Puzzles: Some puzzles and locked areas in the environment need precise skills (such as flying, shooting a certain projectile, or digging) of these creatures.
• Equip a variety of ranged and melee weapons and level them up.
• Skill Chips: Socket special, upgradeable skill chips to alter your gameplay and gain new abilities, such as throwing a bomb or summoning a shield.
