Croc: Legend of the Gobbos[a] is a 1997 game made by Argonaut Software and released by Fox Interactive, it is a platform game. Croc is a 3D platform game, and was an early example of that genre, being released for the PlayStation, Sega Saturn and Windows. Croc: Legend of the Gobbos is set in the imaginary Gobbo Valley, where a young crocodile named Croc embarks on a quest to save his adoptive family (a band of furry creatures called Gobbos) from the evil magician Baron Dante.

The game was first developed shortly after Nintendo and Argonaut had a successful partnership, creating a processing chip for the SNES called the Super FX for use in 3D polygonal games like Star Fox. It was originally pitched to Nintendo to be a 3D version of a platform game in which the player would control Yoshi from Nintendo’s Super Mario series but it was rejected by Nintendo, and instead left to be developed as an independent game, leading to the development of the prototype. Designed by Simon Keating in his very first video game project, the game’s characters and mechanics are designed.

Gameplay:

Croc: Legend of the Gobbos is a third person, 3D platformer that allows players to control the main character, a green crocodile named Croc, in a series of courses set across the different islands of Gobbo Valley. Levels are accessed through a world map, and consist of various different smaller sub-sections taking place both above land and underground (as well as occasionally taking place underwater) that are filled with various enemies and obstacles that try to impede Croc.[3]

The game has been met with average reviews from critics, in which the visuals, music and sound were praised, and the controls, camera and lack of innovation were criticized. It is now one of Argonaut’s best-selling games for PlayStation, having sold more than 3 million units. In 1999, a sequel entitled Croc 2 was released. A 2D port of the game was developed by Virtucraft and released for Game Boy Color in June 2000, with a sequel developed by Natsume Co., Ltd. released in January 2001.
