About This Game
Description:
LEGO City Undercover was undoubtedly a big deal for Nintendo with Wii U alone, and it is an obvious one. We know that Undercover was a huge deal for Nintendo back in early 2013, when it was only available for Wii U. It was a good addition, but it didn’t slow the early system sales down, like other games did (although I can’t think of any other titles that did), and it didn’t appear to stick around for long at Nintendo, either. After all these years of being just a game project in development, one of the few non-licensed LEGO game projects has finally arrived on Nintendo Switch, PS4 and Xbox One, though it looks slightly different, but the content is mostly the same.
LEGO City is still, of course, a popular brand in ‘real’ LEGO and is well known among kids and big kids alike. However, the IP was not under the control of any third party franchise, so TT Games / TT Fusion were free to do whatever they wanted as long as they brought the ‘real world’ approach of the brand into the mix. When we spoke to the developers at the time it was clear that they’d enjoyed the freedom to produce an amusing game that also took the LEGO series in a bold new direction.
Gameplay:
The gameplay is straightforward as with many LEGO games, but sometimes somewhat tricky, such as with the latest releases. Controls are convenient and generally good, though sometimes platforming and the camera can be a bit more cumbersome than we like; we’ve complained about most LEGO games, so it’s no surprise this re-release doesn’t escape the criticism. But overall, our hero Chase McCain has an okay driving style, and it can also be a blast playing around with various cars in the game, some of which may even drive really well, and some of which might be a three-wheeled trolley.
The big change here on Switch, though, is the ditching of dual-screen play – in the original Chase had an in-game tablet that looked awfully similar to the GamePad, and the second screen was a rather charming always-on display. That’s gone, though Chase has his tablet; actually, the second screen is not missed here. Now you can use the D-Pad (or the left Joy-Con’s equivalent) to accept phone calls, and the map screen and ‘scanning’ are on the TV. It was a big deal last year about the GamePad being a part of the game and in reality, that’s not a big deal.
