The world has been ripped apart by one such umbral tear, the “Shadow Rift”, from which monstrous creatures have sprung and the land has been corrupted. You are a Wraith, an elite warrior, bonded with an irreverent, dark spirit that bestows superhuman powers upon you. Here there are no great moral decisions or complex political plots to consider, only one thing to do: enter the rift-filled regions and purify them. The minimalist narrative is the game’s biggest asset; it immediately draws all your focus towards its main protagonists: the combat and the movement define the identity of the game.

The Wraith is predatory and moves gracefully but with an intuitive feel and tremendous strength. The parkour system is not so much about the complicated inputs of buttons as it is about the momentum and flow. Scaling a building is simply holding a button and observing your character smoothly climb, jump from ledges, and swing from pipes just like a panther does. This is not about the realistic and weighty parkour of Mirror’s Edge; it is a power fantasy, a celebration of free motion, of a motion that can be enjoyed at all times.

This is no movement show; it is more a part of combat. Your main weapon is the titular Feral Strike, which is a quick dash that soon targets enemies, enabling you to cover distances in a flash. This one mechanic makes each encounter a three-dimensional ballet of death! You never stay still. You could start off perching on a tall building, while Feral Striking a sniper on another building, only to immediately slide away to avoid a projectile, and then use another dash to finish off a heavy unit from the back.

The pace is as seductive as it is addictive: always finding a target, always moving between them, always using the environment as a springboard and a shield. The combat is tricked-outly deep. At first sight it seems to be just a ‘sneak and poke’ game, but it also displays a lot of tactical sophistication. The attacks of various enemies require different responses. Your frontal attacks will be repelled by agile “Stalkers”; their back or top will be the only way to get a hit on their “Shielded foes,” and you will need to shatter the armor of your “Massive Behemoths” to inflict damage on them. Only a single weapon for you, but your arsenal is limited.
