Outlaws Plus Handful of Missions Remaster NSP today, they seem to look they the old-timey Westerns they were supposed to emulate. Told through a series of decidedly old fashioned cutscenes – there’s something charming about the ol’ timey, 4:3 aspect ratio, hand drawn cutscenes that are nearly thirty years old now – Outlaws actually does a better job than many of the comparable shooters in terms of actually shooting for a story and stringing it together in a cohesive way from one level to the next. Sure, it may have some jerky cutscenes with choppy edges and audible audio problems.

Outlaws was created on Lucasarts’ Jedi Engine, just like the recently re-released Star Wars: Dark Forces. As would be expected, this sequel can be easily ported to modern systems using the same KEX Engine used in the Dark Forces update. We’ve only had a chance to play the new Outlaws version on PC, but the KEX Engine port of Dark Forces worked well for consoles, and we’re hopeful for it to do the same here.

Gameplay:

Outlaws-specific tweaks from Jedi Engine such as slopes and stacked levels and custom per-stack colour maps. The journey to the Outlaws remaster’s menus is a no-brainer, with a standard and expected set of options, such as native support for high frame rates and toggles for turning on or off various effects and upgrades. There are two of these, an original and an updated texture/sprite switch, which can be attached to a mid-game.

Outlaws + Handful of Missions: Remaster is for those who enjoy cowboys, revenge, and some ruff, tuff, and shootin’. Regardless of the difficulty, the hero has to pick up his six-shooter and kill all criminals and scumbags he could meet. Boy, oh boy, it’s fun, it’s cliché, but it’s fun! You’re the gun-toting, former marshal, James Anderson. They have to deal with good, bad and ugly.
