World At War Cobra NSP is no denying the feeling of being successful in penetrating the thick frontal armor on a T-72 with a well placed TOW missile and this definitely adds to the appeal of the game. The variety of units adds to the experience, with tanks, armored personnel carriers and infantry fighting vehicles and support units from both NATO and Warsaw Pact countries available in abundance. Cobra offers a full set of highly capable machines that is as ubiquitous as the M1 Abrams and Leopard 2 and as little known as the T-64 and Challenger 1.

The UI isn’t quite as polished as other RTS games, but it’s functional. Determining the type and amount of ammunition and suppression conditions at a glance can be tricky and can make it hard to make tactical decisions. Moreover, the above-mentioned armor penetration system is praised for its depth but can sometimes be confusingly transparent.

Gameplay:

The dependency on external tools diminishes, and can turn off new players to the genre. In addition to its armored warfare system, Cobra tries to emulate the more complex aspects of modern warfare on a battlefield. Reconnaissance is of great importance, and scouts give essential information on the location and movement of the enemy. Artillery can be very effective if the target is acquired and spotted correctly, but when it is not it can be very destructive. It also brings strategic depth in terms of electronic warfare capabilities, including jamming and counter-battery fire.

Units like reconnaissance may be highly vulnerable or be eliminated in short order, reducing their usefulness. Artillery fire is impressive to watch, but can be hard to coordinate and doesn’t always cause much damage. Armored engagements are the game’s primary interest and other facets of modern war are of secondary importance. A different aspect of Cobra’s that isn’t working is its campaign mode.
