This was shown in an impressive Nintendo Direct back in June, off the bat of which the highlight was a really fun surprise – A brand new Mario & Luigi role-playing game. After 2015’s Paper Jam for 3DS, Mario & Luigi: Brothership is the first installment in the cherished series of fraternal turn-based role-playing games in over ten years. More significantly, it’s the first since the tragic closure of series developer AlphaDream in 2019. But Brothership is being created by some of the original creators of the earlier games, Nintendo says. In any case, I had the opportunity to play it for about 90 minutes at a preview event, and it looks like it might be another late-life smash hit for the O.G. Switch, with some of the best graphics the console has to offer to go along with the fun action.

You have surely noticed that role playing games are back on everyone’s radar this year if you’ve been following the news about the games. The genre has had a fantastic year with FFVII Rebirth, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth and the all-new and hot Metaphor: ReFantazio. But not that they ever left, anyway. But none of those games will prepare you for Brothership like the Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door reboot that will be released this summer. You may carefully time button pushes during assaults to do extra damage in this turn-based role-playing game, which also stars the famous Italian plumber.

It’s your party. Every aspect of what you can do in the overworld is based on Mario and Luigi’s relationship, from silly special skills that you use when solving puzzles to the assaults of your partner when you get into a fight. This is a seafaring adventure, in case the title and marketing didn’t convey that. Mario and Luigi find that some islands no longer have a magical link to the local big magical tree, and are forced to sail around the ocean, connecting each island with the tree, one by one, creating an island-shaped boat. Twistee Island, where everyone enjoys dancing, is where my demo began.

After some time to get used to the mechanics, the journey through Twistee Island lasted about half an hour. Like in other Mario & Luigi titles, buttons will be available to jump or throw hammers at enemies from each brother, independently from the other. Combat works similarly, you must press Luigi’s button in order to use an attack or beat an enemy; otherwise, it will miss. The amusingly named “Luigi Logic” is one of the major new mechanisms that Nintendo demonstrated to us. You can press a button in some select circumstances to activate Luigi Logic to help you out in a context-dependent manner. These can include holding down switches to solve puzzles or shattering boxes that may contain objects.
