Like Nintendo didn’t tamper with the recipe for Super Mario RPG in 2023, this is the game you know and love—just it’s prettier, sounds better, and has some significant quality-of-life improvementsHowever, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is on par with the greatest turn-based role-playing games of the current console age, while Super Mario RPG was clearly an old game brought back to life for a new generation. Considering the weird history Paper Mario has had for twenty years, it’s only natural that some new players would not know what to expect from The Thousand-Year Door. In short, The Thousand-Year Door’s past was gone, as was his spirit.

These days, Paper Mario is most recognised for being the Mario series that is incapable of settling on a single genre. But like the original Thousand-Year Door game on the N64, it obliges players to follow in the Mario & Luigi franchise’s footsteps, and not the Paper Mario series, which was discontinued after the Paper Mario games, including the popular The Origami King, came along. And The Thousand-Year Door’s ranking at the top of the Mario RPG tier list is further cemented with its Switch version.

It’s not that the whole thing has been retooled and redesigned; it’s more of a “new paint job. It has a timeless quality from its pop up figures and setting elements, but with the new widescreen presentation, iconic places are elevated to a contemporary level with vibrant colours and smooth textures. The overall atmosphere of Twilight Town and Creepy Steeple is darker (especially when playing on Switch OLED), the white-petaled trees and the luscious flowers in Boggly Woods are stunning, and the waters around Keelhaul Key have been lit up and shadowed with a newfound quality.

The Thousand-Year Door’s environments don’t have the depth that The Origami King has, but it is an amazing game that could easily have been made for Switch. It’s very functional as well. I did not experience any slowdown when using it in docked or portable mode after spending 41 hours (and counting) with it. It’s the updated version of an all-time classic with quick load times, instant saving, smoothly handled animations and recognized input for timing based Action Commands.
