4-leaf clovers are a mutation of the usually 3-leafed White Clover plant, Trifolium repens. A clover is actually one leaf of a larger plant, and has 3 leaflets. Mutations can be caused by a recessive gene with a low frequency or environmental factors. Often the reason for mutation is differentiable from one clover to another. The mutation does not stop at the 4-leafed variety: 5-leafed clovers are not uncommon. The more leaflets, the less chance to find (and the luckier they are) though, the record of an 18-leaf clover; 10 is the highest I ever saw.

In reality, most people fall into one of two categories – those who have discovered LOTS of 4-leaf clovers, and those who have not discovered any and are not sure if they exist. Then there are precisely 12 people who have found one person in their lifetime. As you can imagine, that third type is even less common than the 4-leaf clover.

According to Guinness World Records, the clover with the most leaflets ever found had 63 of them, and was discovered by Yoshiharu Watanabe of Nasushiobara city, Tochigi prefecture, Japan, on 2 August 2023. Both men were able to find a clover with 56 leaflets through crossbreeding clover plants with a high incidence of clover plants having an abnormally large number of clover leaflets, meaning in each generation that plants produced a greater number of clover leaflets than ever before. Both of the researchers, Shigeo Obara and Yoshiharu Watanabe, adopted natural crossbreeding, and in addition, the latter adapted manual crossbreeding.

American Gabriella Gerhardt broke the previous record for highest number of 4 leaf clovers collected in 1 hour by one person in 2019 (451). In 2018 she previously held the world record for the most 4-leaf clovers found by one person in eight hours (887). On January 1st, 2023 she set two new records: with the highest number of 6-leaf clovers (1,437), and the highest number of 7-leaf clovers (209). Gabriella Gerhardt has held five Guinness World Records with a maximum collection of 4-leaf clovers being 118,791 in 2023, surpassing Edward Martin of America who had 111,060.

Key Features:

Four-leaf clover: leaves may be somewhat more square or diamond-shaped than the typical triangle with three leaflets.
Asymmetry: The fourth leaf is often quite different in size.
Genetic Anomaly: The mutation is recessive. Clovers have 4 sets of chromosomes (allotetraploids) and it is very rare that all genetic conditions are present for a fourth leaf.
Pattern Disturbance: Don’t count individual leaves. Rather, search areas for geometric discontinuities (e.g., searching for a square in a collection of triangles).
Look from Above: This means standing to get a good overview of the patch and allowing your eyes to “wait” for an abnormality to “pop” into your vision.
