Memories Off Sousou : メモリーズオフ Hepburn: Memoriizu Ofu) is a series of Japanese romance visual novel video games developed by KID. The first to be released was called Memories Off for PlayStation in 1999. Memories Off games are available on PC as well as video and handheld game consoles like PlayStation 2, Dreamcast, WonderSwan Color, and PlayStation Portable. Some of the series’ games have been turned into original video format animation, novels, or even manga.

KID went bankrupt in 2006, thus putting an end to the development of Memories Off #5: Encore. At the same time, it also meant that the game series was temporarily discontinued. Development was restarted by Cyberfront, though, and Memories Off #5: Encore was released on July 12, 2007. However, as of November 30, 2007, 5pb. Cyberfronthase sold the series to Games, who took over the rights for the series. All further development of the series will be carried out by 5pb. Games.[1][2]

Gameplay:

Memories Off is a visual novel, in which the game’s action consists mostly of reading through the dialogue or story that is presented on the screen. Every so often, the game will pause, and the player is given a chance to choose from two to five options regarding how he or she wishes to advance the game. Choices made by the player will then diverge with different paths to develop a single heroine, with a final character end being given at the end of each path. Starting from Memories Off 2nd, all main series games offer the possibility of multiple endings for each of the heroines.

Most important moments in the games have voice acting, and all of the main series games since Memories Off 2ndhaves been fully voiced. The environments and objects that occur in the game are also mostly non-interactive and non-free roaming, but some scenes from the series have been added to the series starting from You That Become A Memory ~Memories Off~ to improve the visual impression.

Key Features:

• Note that the game does not have a conventional “common route. Instead, character routes are independent, self-contained stories, with the character’s personality changing drastically from one route to another.
• The “Unknown Fiancée” Trope: Protagonist Itsuki Kusumegi is tied to a family tradition to start the game. His face and identitareis unknown to an unknown girl named Aoi, who he’s engaged to be marrito on his 17th birthday.
• Psychological Tension: It’s not a typical romance, but rather a psychological tension, varying degrees of character obsession, and a ‘religious-like’ devotion to his family’s p,rophecies which is undermined as the truth comes to light.
• The subtitle of the book changes, reflecting Itsuki’s character growth, as the “Not always true” Twist. In passing through the story, he comes to understand that his own “he must die” and “God must will it” dogma is “not always true.
• The game’s cast is diverse with sub-heroines, upperclassman Sa,e Sunomiya and childhood friend Nene Amaha, all challenging Itsuki to think differently about his life and decisions.
