Resident Evil 4 NSP Switch to be positioned, isn’t it, hmm? New games arrive at the eShop every week, and the games currently in there are all good – both ported and new and indie and AAA. The fact that one of the all-time great games of all time is dropping on a Tuesday just for digital is telling. And Resident Evil 4 still is one of the best.

No need to get into the details that we’re all eminently familiar with; the original title has been re-released on several platforms since its 2005 Gamecube release (notably Wii, but we’ll get to that in a bit), and there are no changes to the core game. Their colors are as faded as they are dry, and the rural Spanish where they are spoken (or rather, ‘rural unnamed European country’ whose Spanish is a bit Mexican) is quiet as ever.

Resident Evil 4 NSP Gameplay:

The subdued colour scheme of this third numbered sequel (fourth if we include Zero) is extremely limited and plays a massive role in the claustrophobic world Leon S. Kennedy finds himself in when he is chasing the President’s kidnapped daughter. The Las Plagas parasite turns the village into a pallid, but not unappealing, group of villagers, cultists, and henchmen, as opposed to the shambling zombies of the earlier entries.

The down-and-up movement of RE4 is always a thing to get used to, and it’s still taking time to not press that instinct to headshot, but this is an extra time these days. The game marked a turn of the screw from the first three installments, director Shinji Mikami taking the B-movie shlock of the first three and adding A-grade action and production values, an over-the-shoulder camera replacing the unsettling, fixed angles of the previous games, and pushing the series in an action direction.

• The Merchant: A mysterious NPC that you meet on your way. Weapons can be bought, sold, upgrade,d and treasures can be collected to be traded for weapons or exclusive treasures.
• Dynamic Enemy A.I.Battlele a highly organized and intelligent horde of infected villagers called Ganados. Hostiles will try to trap, outflank, and attack you with a variety of weapons.
• Context-Sensitive Actions: You can kick down doors, jump through windows, avoid death from attacks, or use melee finishers on stunned enemies.
