Call of Sentinels wasn’t all that memorable. It’s not a terrible game, but it could have been better. I have a few problems with the game: movement feels cumbersome, and combat is clunky. It feels unfinished, which isn’t normally a bad thing, but the game isn’t that interesting. Innovative survival- and bullet hell-style, high dynamics, variable builds, players from the entire world playing in the arena. Beautiful hand-drawn graphics. Twitch integration for Twitch streamers, letting viewers access gameplay.

Between runs, players can use coins they earn to buy items to boost their character’s stats. It appears as though players can choose to make a character how they want to, but may also feel like there’s a proper build progression to adhere to. The central loop in Call of Sentinel looks like it’s churning out waves and waves of enemies, hoping for some good RNG as well as the power-up purchases, and repeating till the end of the story or the end of the high score.

Gameplay:

During the entire run, the sentinels will drop random quests for the player to complete. Once a quest is completed, players can select one of the blessings. A blessing is a passive power-up for a character. The type of quest given by the sentinel and the blessings given to the player are random, as is the sentinel that decides to bless the player. Bad RNG will make a run go bad, and it will be frustrating.

My biggest problem is the unneeded grind of the game. When you buy the items you want to advance the story or do well in Endless, it will take more time than it’s worth. Between runs, players may purchase items using the coins earned during a run. One of these has permanent passive stat boosts and is upgradable. Players will need to purchase materials and pay for upgrading to upgrade an item.
