About This Game
Description:
Labyrinth of the Demon King is a video game released by Top Hat Studios and developed by J. R. Hudepohl for release in 2025. The game was released with mixed reviews: On release, it was hailed for its horror atmosphere and visual stylistic similarities to titles in the PlayStation survival genre, but criticized for its design shortcomings. Review aggregator Metacritic has the game with “mixed or average” ratings[7], and several critics have praised it in comparison to PlayStation games such as Silent Hill and King’s Field.
Edwin Evans-Thirlwell of Rock Paper Shotgun praised the game’s aesthetics, describing them as a “convincing encapsulation of the ambience of Silent Hill [games]” although noting its “appallingly sluggish movement”.[12] Describing the game as one of the best horror titles of the year,[14] Bloody Disgusting commended its “cohesive vision” and “period-accurate aesthetics” as “one of the most masterfully crafted horror games in recent memory,” although it considered the player’s increasing power over time reduced the game’s horror and difficulty.
Gameplay:
War and disease have ravaged Feudal Japan, and demons roam the earth. Ashigaru no Jō, a warrior of Takeda Nobumitsu, is trying to eradicate the demons from the world. After the Demon King lures them into a trap, the only one remaining of the Takeda clan and their army is the player. The player enters the titular Labyrinth to avenge their fallen Lord and to destroy the Demon King.[2]
Labyrinth of the Demon King is a video game developed and published independently by J. R. Hudepohl for New Zealand. The concept for the Japanese setting was inspired by a trip to Kitagi Island in Japan, and the story was inspired by Japanese myths, such as the killing of Shuten-dōji, noted Hudepohl. Hudepohl was fond of survival horror games, such as Resident Evil and Silent Hill for their atmosphere; Fatal Frame 2 and Onimusha for the Japanese setting; and Condemned: Criminal Origins for gameplay, all of which heavily influenced the design.
Key Features:
- The game’s art style has a retro feel to it, like a game created in the 90s, with PS1 polygon art, 4:3 aspect ratios, lots of dither filtering,g and a dark, moody grain.
- Combat: A typical Soulslike is not the case here; players have to manage their survival stamina for each round. The players must take care to block parry,y, and attack using katanas, bows,o,ws, and even firearms.
- Japanese Mythology & Lore: The game is deeply influenced by the Buddhist and Shinto mythology, and features a series of encounters with Yōkai and demonic entities, whose strength is boosted by a blacksmith’s demonic soul (Shirikodama) collected by a Kappa.
- Classic Survival Horror Mechanics: Exploration is at the heart of the game, with interconnected towers making up a maze-like layout, navigation done through a map, solving puzzles, ses and a relentless stalker enemy that cannot be killed.
- Scarcity and Risk/Reward: Healing and resources are limited, and players are forced to make difficult choices on whether to run away from dangers or engage in combat in cramped corridors.
