Description:

Tales of Kenzera: Zau starts off with the death of a Father, and a gift for their son. Zuberi is dealing with the loss of his father, and is given a book his Father left for him in the days after. In that book is our story. Zau, Shaman to the people of Amandla beseeches Kalunga the God of Death, to return his Father’s spirit, in exchange Zau will shepard the 3 great spirits who have denied Kalunga into the realm of death.

Most of the game centres around a young shaman named Zau who has lost his father recently. He heads off to Kalunga, the God of Death, in an attempt to bring his father back to life, leading him to undertake a journey across the realm of Kenzera, and the encounter with the three great spirits. Every spirit has its story of loss and death and every time the loss and death occurs it has a powerful emotional beat. In this game, I was not expecting to be close to tears when it comes to the boss fights. The story is a focus, and it doesn’t get in the way of gameplay – most of the cut scenes are told efficiently on the back of amazing writing. Zau also exchanges dialogue with Kalunga during his run and jumping around the globe.

Gameplay:

Zau has two masks to help him on his journey. Mask of the Moon, a mask that specializes in ranged attacks and freezing stasis; Mask of the Sun, a close range combo mask. You can switch between each one of them as you see fit in combat, and can create some very satisfying combinations. Duality. So it’s the name of the game and it is a theme that gets repeated throughout. Fathers and sons. Life and death. The two masks, and more that I can’t get into for spoiler reasons.

The platforming and action that goes with the story is mostly fantastic, with Zau’s ability to move picking up after more abilities are unlocked. Platforming is quick and fun in an almost rhythmic pattern that’s made up of a combination of a double jump, wall jump and dash. The game has some secrets and unlockables, but is pretty easy in general for the duration of the story. Nevertheless, I found myself enjoying the bouncing around the places that I had already been.

• Mask-Swapping Combat: Swap between masks and dance the Sun and Moon. The Sun mask is for aggressive, up-close and personal melee, while the Moon mask is for ranged attacks and crowd control.
• Deeply Personal Story, developed by Surgent Studios and actor Abubakar Salim, is a moving, interactive allegory on how to navigate grief, healing and courage after the loss of a loved one.
• Bantu-Inspired Universe: Journey through the mystical, vast worlds of Kenzera, as you travel through lush jungles, dunes and volcanic caverns, all set to a rich, award-winning musical score that celebrates African folklore.
• Shamanic Abilities: Activate new cosmic abilities and traversal utilities to make your way through the world. Your skills, like gliding or freezing waterfalls, make your way to platforming and fighting efforts.
• Metroidvania Exploration: Explore large, colourful biomes at your own pace, solve puzzles and fight some legendary, mythic creatures such as the Tokoloshe and the GaGorib.
