Woodcutter The opening story explains everything, and provides some voice acting to give the game a bit more of a premium feel than the overwhelming number of Metroidvanias that we read about on PSN here, and once that’s done you’re going to be Cherry the poor, decrepit, but surprisingly gruesome, girl, and some ally will repair you before you get a feel for how basic the movement and combat mechanics are that Cherry begins with. Despite being set in a 2D, side-on perspective, Cookie Cutter is definitely a traditional Metroidvania game in terms of basic gameplay.

You need to run, jump, and crouch your way through the screens of obstacles, and your educated right foot will allow you to Chun-Li through the myriad of enemies that infest all the screens. First impressions are fairly positive as the action is swift, the colour schemes are vibrant,t and the animation isn’t bad. There’s a bit of a Prince of Persia vibe in terms of how well-presented it all is.

The Megastructure is several locations within the universe, connected with a tunnel/elevator network that will enable Cherry to reach her goals. As with all Metroidvania games, the maps are a bit intimidating—and there is one map for the Megastructure, as well as one for each sublocation, which is updated as you go—happily, you can use the maps displayed on your screen at all times. The combat system is centered around chaining together brutal melee attacks.
